Regardless of age, experience, or goals, I teach all of my students music theory and how to read basic music notation. Though they are interconnected, most instructors, if at all, only teach reading notation, not the complex theory behind the notation.

Here are some of the basic ideas we'll start with, regardless of which instrument or style you wish to learn:

Music = Pitch & Meter

Basically, music is no more than certain frequencies at certain times. Through the proper exercises and drills, we learn how to recognize and manipulate these two variables and turn them into music!

The 5 Elements of Music:

  1. Melody

  2. Harmony

  3. Chords

  4. Basslines/Counterpoint

  5. Rhythms

Like a car with many moving parts, there is one goal- to move forward and arrive to our destination. And though the wheels move towards the direction the vehicle is heading, there are many parts just as important to arriving at our destination, like the cooling fan, that are turning in the opposite direction.

Music or songs, can be compared to a car in this way. The Melody is the purpose or the wheels, and the other parts are there moving to support it. Sometimes, the parts may move in opposite directions, but when done right, support each other well, regardless. Music with only a melody, would be like a car with only wheels.
